In the first installment of the Detox Toolkit, we talked you through the essentials for understanding how and why your body needs to cleanse and detox. We know there is no one-size-fits-all approach to health and wellness, so this week, Sand & Smoke contributor Gabriele Kurz breaks down different detoxing options to help make the process a little less intimidating.
THE DETOX OPTIONS.
According to many healing experts, detoxification through special cleansing programs may be the missing link to disease prevention, especially for immune-deficiency diseases like cancer, arthritis, diabetes, chronic fatigue syndrome and candida.
Detoxing can be done on different levels to suit your personal preferences. The below options provide powerful options to cleanse and nourish your cells. Be mindful of how your body responds to detox and adjust if needed, adding in more staple (but raw) foods if you feel the juice cleanse is too extreme, or reducing from raw food to a pure juice cleanse if your body allows.
OPTION 1. JUICE CLEANSE.
Taking all your food in liquid form for 2 to 3 days allows your digestive tract to rest. This type of detox is excellent for a few days before proceeding to more staple healthy foods as below.
OPTION 2. RAW FOOD.
Eat only raw and vegan food all day. This includes raw salads, fruits and vegetables, sprouts and juices. This is an excellent detox for a couple of days and can also be a transition into or out of a juice cleanse.
OPTION 3. RAW UNTIL FOUR.
Have raw and vegan food all day until 4pm. This includes raw salads, fruits and vegetables, sprouts and juices. After 4pm you can continue with light foods and teas. Ideal meals are soups, steamed vegetables and small amounts of good carbohydrates such as sweet potato, quinoa and brown rice. After the cleanse you may re-introduce animal proteins if you wish. This option is excellent for a moderate cleanse program and can be pursued for longer than a week, or following the initial juice cleanse or raw food days.
Keep the following items on hand as important supplements to support the detox process.
