What happens when two of the region’s fiercest (and hottest) fitness instructors get married? They create a brand of training programs so intense and effective and, dare we say it, fun, that a 45minute session will leave you feeling like a whole new, fitter, stronger you. This is 1SIX8, the (brain)child of Linda Chambers and Brian Cochrane, the power couple who are changing the game when it comes to effective training.
The Brangelina of the Middle East’s fitness scene, there are not many gym-goers who wouldn’t already be familiar with one of Brian or Linda’s infamous Les Mills classes where they give, and expect 110%. And like Brangelina, Brian, 33 and Linda, 36 have developed a fan club of their own with every one of their classes packed with a loyal band of devotees who would happily follow them from gym to gym because once you have experienced one of their classes its hard to go back. It’s this reputation and their own expertise and determination that have allowed the pair to make such a huge impact on the way people train and the results they see. Now, after a combined 30 years in the industry perfecting their craft and developing programmes for industry giants, the couple have made the leap from instructing classes to creating them with the launch of their own brand 1SIX8. The first class to come out of this class is BURN, a unique HIIT style workout, which in only a few months has become the talk of the fitness town with everyone wanting to feel the burn. Sand & Smoke sat down with the powerhouse couple to learn what their brand is all about.
We have both been in the fitness industry for over 16 years and during that time have been fortunate enough to have worked with, and consulted for some of the biggest health and fitness brands on the planet such as Nike, Les Mills International, Golds Gym International, Reebok, TRX Training and Virgin Active Health clubs. During our career we have developed so many programmes for some of these companies and helped create some incredible workout spaces that we are incredibly proud of. But as a consultant you always end up walking away and losing control of the greatness that you have helped to create. So we decided around 2 years ago that we would create our own concept that would be a market leader and truly help change the industry for the better. I think what we have created is a phenomenal concept that people love because its only purpose is to get results. We are very excited about the future as we have some huge things planned!
Its really simple actually. There are 168 hours in a week and we believe that to achieve health and wellbeing, you have to be doing the right things in the 3-5 hours per week that you do train, but more importantly, you must also consider the 163-165 that you DONT. Also, in Chinese, the numbers 1, 6 and 8 roughly translate to mean: the beginning of the road to wealth. In our case, your wealth is your health.
Our brand is all about creating the worlds most effective workouts and developing unique workout spaces. We believe in creating time-efficient, results based workouts to allow you to maximise your results in the shortest amount of time. We also believe in educating our community about lifestyle, nutrition and exercise to allow them to make smarter choices for the hours that they are not training, to support their goals.
1SIX8 is actually comprised of 4 key fitness concepts: BURN, PEDAL, PUNCH, BEND.
BURN (which is available now at our studio inside The Warehouse Gym) is our High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) concept that involves a combination of running, TRX, rowing and bodyweight/resistance training exercises. Each 45 minute workout focuses on a different area of the body so that, just like a good gym program, you can ensure you get stronger/more toned/leaner with every workout. We use a method called High Rep Hypertrophy Training (HRHT) to achieve these great results. Also, every workout has a HIIT component using the Treadmills and Rowing Machines that will encourage fat loss, increase endurance and also releases a hormone called IGF-1 which helps you to look younger, improve lean muscle and helps you get really fit…fast! Our program changes every month to prevent you from hitting workout plateaus.

The beauty of our programming is that it is self-regulated, so regardless of your fitness level you can take the class. Everyone works to their own threshold so if walking at 7kph if your max, then you will get the same results as the person who can run at 18kph, as you are both working at the same intensity, plus, with our programming you will notice that you will get much fitter in a relatively short space of time.
We are opening our flagship 1SIX8 facility this year which will be the first club of its kind in the world! So we are pretty excited about that, we are also planning another 2-3 clubs in the UAE and then plan to take our concept to other countries, where we are already generating some interest.
