In a region that seems to have the same pull to Instagram hopefuls as Hollywood does to budding starlets standing out from the social media crowd is no easy feat. Between the perfect filter, the right light, unique tone of voice and of course the perfect outfit, only the strong survive. The competition has created some pretty remarkable creative talent but none have caught our eye as much as Daakiya, aka – Alicia and Mashhad, the Australian and Pakistani duo who are not only surviving, but setting a refreshing new standard with their mastery of the less is more ethos, both in their personal style and sharp tone of voice. It’s not only Dubai they are making their mark on either, the pair’s feeds are filled with everywhere from NYC to Capri, not to mention Sand & Smoke favourite BARE Fitness. Whilst their shoot locations are impressive, it’s their clean, minimalist and uber-cool aesthetic that has sealed their social media cred. Sand & Smoke spent a week living vicariously through their wardrobe and travel diary, and trust us, you will want to take notes.

“The lines between activewear and daytime wear are more blurred than ever. We always find a way to keep active when we are traveling, between discovering new workout trends like Barry’s Bootcamp in NYC or mapping out a walking tour of design spaces and architectural delights in Copenhagen, we rarely come back to Dubai feeling guilty.”

“Our love for the minimal touches on every part of our lives and that includes when we workout. Not to be confused with our actual workouts which take place at BARE, the home of Dubai’s toughest workout but rather what we wear while we are dripping with sweat.”

“Mashhad bought this statement bomber in Rome in 2010, when he was on his way to art school in Florence for a year. Since then the bomber jacket has definitely made its way back onto the scene, but it’s the comfort and the structure which are the main selling points, and will make him wear it again and again.”
